THE SMALL PRINT ON SPANISH GOODS IN TRANSIT INSURANCE IN SPAIN.

Like a lot of things in Spain, there is a lot of small print (usually in Spanish) on insurance documents and not many of us will have the time or can be bothered to read it all. Your insurance Broker or insurance agent in Spain should have gone through the policy with you and informed you of the cover. I have no doubt that they informed you that your goods in transit, i.e.. the goods you are carrying or transporting around Spain and Europe, particularly the UK are covered.

Oooops, they may be  - but with restrictions. Did you know that the Spanish insurance policies for covering goods in transit, do offer cover for goods in transit and in the event that the vehicle or goods are stolen, will NOT be covered unless the theft is conducted with violence or violent intent.

FALSE CLAIMS ON GOODS IN TRANSIT INSURANCE IN SPAIN.

A LESSON WE CAN ALL LEARN - BY OUR EXPERIENCE.

It has recently come to our attention that the insurance policies being issued by some insurance companies in Spain that supposedly covers goods in transit is not quite what it seems. In this incident, an expensive motorcycle was collected from the UK by a British removals Business, fully registered and legal in Spain and had been operating for over 11 years. His insurance was up to date and as he was a removal and transportation business, the owners had requested that any goods they carry be covered for fire and theft. In a large van, goods up to the value of €50,000 or more could easily be carried depending on the cargo.

The Transport company collected the vehicle along with a selection of other goods from several locations, and when the van was full, started to make their way to Spain, via France. The driver stopped overnight in the UK, parked the vehicle in a secure parking area of the Hotel car park, and went to bed about pm. When he woke up in the morning the vehicle had been stolen, along with all it's contents.

Police were informed and they eventually found the vehicle the next day, needless to say, with the contents scattered everywhere and the valuable goods removed, including the new motorcycle. When the owner of the van went to the insurance company to claim for the loss of the goods in transit, they informed him that he was not insured for theft cover, as the theft had not taken place with violence or the intent of violence. Unfortunately this nearly ruined his business as the owner had to compensate his clients for the loss of all the goods that were being transported, using his own funds.

We examined his policy to confirm that his legal and defence would also not support him in court as the theft was not something he could claim against. So one thing led to another.

He has now taken out a goods in Transit Insurance policy with www.insuranceinspain.com that DOES insure the contents of his vehicles for fire and theft and damages caused in an accident, and the theft does not require the annexe that some form of violence must be present in attempting the theft before the insurance is valid.
