WHAT IS A CONSORCIO CLAIM IN SPAIN?
The Consorcio de Compensation de Seguros or CSS, the Spanish Insurance Compensation Scheme is a Government Scheme that provides cover for direct physical damage only and is a compulsory Government insurance Scheme for catastrophic risks.
It is paid for by the Insurance Policy Tax that is charged on all insurance policies issued in Spain.

WHEN DO YOU NEED TO USE OUR CONSORCIO CLAIMS SERVICE?
The www.insuranceinspain.com Consorcio claim service is designed to provide you with the help and assistance you need when your insurance Agent or Broker in Spain states that you need to make a Consorcio Claim against your insurance.
Many insurance Agents and insurance Brokers in Spain won't or don't want to process Consorcio insurance claims as they can sometimes be complicated, long winded, and it all needs to be done in Spanish. They don't get paid for doing so and it can take a lot of time for the claim handlers to process and keep chasing.
Catastrophic events such as floods can affect a lot of people, as can be seen by the number of floods and weather related events that took place in Spain during 2019. Thousands of claims were made to the Consorcio and phone lines were full for weeks.
CATASTROHIC EVENTS IN SPAIN.
The Consorcio De Seguros would normally classify an event such as flooding, earthquakes, hurricanes and human-made disasters such as a terrorist attack and what we would consider, acts of god, for want of a better expression.
This type of event is not normally covered under your conventional house or car insurance and hence your insurance company, in the event of one of these type of catastrophes, would refer you to the Consorcio insurance scheme.
WILL MY INSURANCE AGENT OR BROKER DO THIS FOR ME?
Not necessarily. As it is not a claim that would accepted by your insurance company, or a claim you could make through your conventional insurance policy via your Insurance Broker or Insurance Agent, you may be left to deal with it yourself.
Good insurance Agents, may, as part of their customer service, sort the claim out for you. They are under no obligation to do so, as it is not covered under the insurance policy they provide and therefore nothing to do with them.
