Insuring your British registered car in Spain.

British registered car insurance in Spain is often much cheaper than car insurance in the UK. The insurance for British registered cars also includes a mandatory breakdown and recovery service, as you are not permitted to tow a vehicle under any circumstances in Spain. One of the inconveniences of having a British registered vehicle in Spain is that it must have a valid MOT certificate from the country of origin. So you have to take it back to the UK to get a valid MOT from a testing station in the UK.

Some residents keep their British registered cars in Spain and leave them at the airport parking areas for use when they fly out regularly so that they don’t have to keep having to pay expensive hire charges. Others leave them at their own properties.

Importing of British plated vehicles is not difficult and if the vehicle is here for more than 3 or 6 months (The Spanish law on this is not being quoted as some English plated cars have been here for many year) it should officially be imported. If your car is on British registration plates and then you decide to import your vehicle, you can easily continue with your existing Spanish insurance policy – which does come in English, we just change the registration number. Once on Spanish plates, the insurance renewal premium is often cheaper, and can also be paid in instalments.

Classic and vintage car and motorcycle insurances are also available although Fully Comprehensive insurance for classic motorcycles is not available at this time. Insurance policies cover the whole spectrum of insurance cover from the minimum legal requirements of third party only, to fully comprehensive.  All are inclusive of the breakdown recovery and civil and legal defence as standard.

European Green Cards are no longer required as the policies include travel throughout Europe as standard.
